Cycling an axolotl tank

What cycling means, why it matters and why an axolotl should not be used to start the process.

5 June 2026

Cycling is the process of building the biological filtration that handles nitrogen waste.

It is not optional background decoration. It is one of the safety systems that keeps an axolotl from living in its own waste.

What cycling does

In simple terms:

  • Waste creates ammonia
  • Microbes convert ammonia to nitrite
  • Other microbes convert nitrite to nitrate
  • The keeper manages nitrate through export

That is the basic nitrogen pathway. It does not make the tank maintenance-free, but it makes the tank safer.

Do not cycle with the axolotl

An axolotl should not be used as the ammonia source while a tank cycles.

Fish-in cycling is already risky for fish. For axolotls, ammonia and nitrite exposure is a serious welfare problem.

Build the filter first. Add the animal later.
